Every morning I go to a cafe to get my work done. My goal is to get there by 8:30, spend an hour or two on homework, an hour and a half writing what I currently call my “Cuba Novel”, and then work on my memoir for an hour. If all goes well I’m out the door by 1:00 pm to head home and prepare for practice.

Today I wake up at 8:45, after having snoozed my alarm too many times. I leave the house late, arriving at the cafe at 9:20. Even still, I finished my homework and my goals for each project by 12:25 pm.

“I can go home early,” I thought to myself. I almost packed away my laptop, put my phone in my bag, took one last swig of my mocha latte, and walked out the door. I would’ve been standing at my car door, parked right outside the cafe. I would’ve been fiddling with my keys, about to get in, when a large white work van careened into me and my car.

Instead, at 12:27 pm I opened my blog. I hadn’t started writing yet. I was merely staring at the blank page when a crash came from outside the cafe window. I looked up from my laptop as the white van continued to scrape along the side of my beautiful cherry-red Ford Escape, Rosemary.

“OH MY GOSH!” I jumped up and grabbed my stuff so fast without even looking down at it, my eyes in shock at what was happening to my baby. I ran to the van with my camera out, taking the pictures and videos I needed at 12:30 pm.

My hands were shaking and as I came around to the driver’s side, I could see his were too. I put my camera down and I didn’t know what to say. To my right, a cop car was coming around the corner. I moved away from the driver’s window and waved for their assistance.

Everyone’s information was given and shared and we were both safe. Apparently, this work van was so old the steering wheel jammed as he tried to turn the corner.

It sucks that Rosemary has a bumper that hangs at her side like a fin and her cherry red paint is now adorned with white skid marks. But I could have been standing in a different place this afternoon. Earlier this week I saw a car accident in which the passengers were not as lucky.

I’m just saying that Life is the blessing, other inconveniences are dust in the wind. Never forget that.
